It was year # 1 for Spirit West Coast (Thurs, Friday, Saturday (July 31 - Aug 2, 1997) On the last morning of that first year, someone brought a copy of the San Francisco Chronicle, Northern California’s leading newspaper, out to the leadership team who were all camping onsite at Laguna Seca. Event Director Jon and the leadership team had no idea the S.F. Chronicle had been to the festival on opening day and they were all stunned to see this huge story on the front page of the prestigious newspaper (and the carryover story on an inside page).

Spirit West Coast never knew who the young girl was in that incredible front photo but were thrilled beyond measure to get such unexpected press of that very first year.
